Wake up, put on warm cloths, and head outside in cold November morning.
Walking out to the barn, cleaning the area, getting the cows in place, milking, cleaning again, bringing it all inside, straining and separating, cooling, and cleaning. All to do it again that evening.
Is it worth it? All this work?
OH YEA IT IS!
The milk from our Cow, Ladybug, is amazing.
Jersey cows are known for their delicious, creamy milk, and Ladybug did not disappoint. Each day we are getting almost 2 gallons of beautiful raw milk from her. There is a thick layer of cream at the top that can be spooned off and used in coffee, or to make butter with. K has made yogurt, cheese, and cooked with it too!
It is wonderful. The best part is that K is really enjoying the routine of milking. Things are going very smoothly, especially thanks to the fact that this is not Ladybug’s first time. She was trained to milk before, and so for us first timers, this has been incredible smooth.
We have learned that buying a well trained cow, pregnant, and not her fist freshening, was worth every penny for a noob.
We purchased Ladybug from Adam and Faith at Misty Morning, and we cannot recommend their cows enough!
If your thinking about taking the Cow plunge, save your money and buy quality. It is worth the wait, and can make a huge difference. We were once offered a Free Jersey cow. We turned it down, and a good thing we did, the difference in milking the two animals has been night and day different.
In addtion to milk, we have been getting a lot of wonderful, organic, meat from the field this week!
Last week I was fortunate enough to get 2 deer with my Bow.
That meant it was time to butcher 2 deer, and when I asked if you would like to see how that was done, I got TONS of emails back saying YES PLEASE!
So here is the video….
We are down 1 camera here at Homesteady, my Canon 70 D, which is my workhorse, broke during the deer hunt video filming. Unfortunately that meant this video isn’t the easiest to learn from, but it covers a lot of the basics, and is a live demonstration of it all.
If your really serious about learning to hunt and process your own deer, I have a great course at the site…
It is a video course, with step by step butchering breakdown filmed on multiple cameras, including a GO Pro attached to the knife for perfect shots of whats happening. The class is on sale for the month of November, just $35 for the whole thing.
Make a nice gift for the aspiring hunter in your life 😉
Speaking of Gifts, this time of year lots of items are being purchased on Amazon for people… If you want to support our work here and not spend another dime extra to do that, please do your gift shopping through www.AMSTEADY.COM, (click on that link or type that in your url bar) it will forward you right to amazon, and in the process we will get an affiliate bonus for sending you there, at no extra cost to you. I would really appreciate this, it would help me replace my broken camera!
Thanks for your continued support of our show, and I hope your getting as awesome a harvest from your homestead as we have been these last few weeks!
